SQ805A - Shokichi Red Mini Kabocha
C. maxima. This productive, mini kabocha is a red-skinned version of Shochiki Green. Expect the same five to seven fruits per plant, only slightly larger, with dark orange, fine grained flesh. The flavour is sweet and nutty — roasting certainly elevates the sweetness. It pairs exceedingly well with other rich flavours like sage in browned butter, as well as sharp tastes like green apple and chardonay. Shokichi Red Mini Kabocha performed well in our summer field trials, not straying far from the planted row, and producing a large harvest of smallish kabocha fruits.

How To Grow
The three species of squash that we offer represent a wide variety of shapes and colours. Each will cross-pollinate readily within their species. For instance, all C. pepo will cross-pollinate with each other, but not with C. maxima or C. moschata. For people who want to save their seeds, this is a very important consideration. The fruits themselves will not be affected by cross pollination, but the seeds inside will be, so squash need to be grown in isolation from other members of their species if seed saving is the goal.
