Dense bushes of rich green foliage reveal brightly coloured orange "lanterns" by the end of summer, hence the common name for Physalis is Chinese Lanterns. Physalis seeds are a close relative of the tomatillo family and grows a papery husk (calyx) over a small, inedible fruit. The husks can be removed or gathered by the stems and dried for fall and Christmas decorations. Physalis will grow in partial shade or full sun, and does well in soils that are slightly acidic.
Bloom time: Summer to early autumn.
