AR103A - Imperial Star Organic

Regular price $6.99 $0.00

CERTIFIED ORGANIC! These tall, hardy plants produce seven to eight highly uniform, nearly spineless buds in the first growing season. The buds are sweet and tender. Imperial Star Organic artichoke seeds are a great choice for the home gardener or for open field production. The plants grow 90-120cm (36-48") tall. This variety is sometimes listed under the name Tavor. It's a bit easier to get first-season harvests from Imperial Star than some of the other artichoke varieties, but it is also perennial, so it will produce for several years to come. The buds are a terrific mid-summer treat.

How To Grow

It takes some work and a lot of patience to grow artichokes from seed, but it’s worth the effort. Commercial culture is limited to warm areas hardiness zone 7 and above. Artichokes require good soil, regular watering and feeding, plus frost protection in winter. Before frost, cut back to 15cm (6″) tall and mulch with soil, straw or leaves to keep the root from freezing. Uncover in April. Offshoots of these plants should be set out in the spring, so that the older plants can be replaced after a few years. Follow along with this handy How to Grow Artichokes from Seeds Guide and grow food.
