ON592A - Welsh Onion Organic

Regular price $3.69 $0.00

CERTIFIED ORGANIC! Allium fistulosum. Welsh onions are so named because they are so large they resemble leeks. Instead, they are closer to over-sized scallions, and are noted for their hollow stems. They can be harvested at an immature scallion-size, or left to grow to full size. Welsh Onion Organic is a hardy biennial that will bloom the following summer if left to overwinter. A cluster of creamy white flowers appears that is very ornamental and much loved by bees. As a food crop, we recommend sowing from March to May and harvesting from July through December. The mature plants grow to 50cm (18") tall and are hardy to Zone 4.

How To Grow

Choose sweet onion varieties for enjoying raw or cooked within a couple of months of harvest. Storage types keep much longer, and will last until the following spring in the right conditions. All onions are photoperiodic – day length triggers bulb development. Our varieties are all “long day” types, suitable for northern US and Canada.
